If you’ve been collecting or investing in gems, or just acquired a few, you probably want to know what your gems and jewels are worth. In order to determine the value of your precious and semi-precious gemstones and jewels, you will first have to figure out how much they weigh. There are two ways to determine the weight of your gems, which one is right for you will depend on how many gems you need to weigh, and how hard you want to work.
The first way to determine the carat weight of your gems and jewels is to use a standard digital scale such as a postage scale. Postage scales work great when your gems are too large for a gem scale to weigh. Remember postage scales are not going to provide you a weight in carats, so there is some math involved. Weigh your gem in either ounces or grams, grams are easier to calculate, and do the math. One carat is equal to 5 grams, and one ounce is equal to 28.4 grams. So if you measured using ounces you must multiply your gems ounce weight by 28.4 to determine its gram weight and then multiply again by 5 to determine the carat weight of your gem. If you measured in grams you only need to multiply your gems gram weight by 5 in order to determine your gems carat weight.
The second and simplest way to determine the carat weight of your gems and jewels is to use an ultra high precision digital gem scale, which will weight your gems in carats for you. Most gem scales will also offer you weight measurements in ounces, grams, and grains, as well, but carat weigh is what you require. Simply set the scale to measure in carats and place your gem on the weighing platform, the scale does all the work and you know the exact carat weigh of your gem.
Gem scales are most often found being used by gold and jewelry buyers, simply because most people don’t have bullion to sell, however almost everyone has jewelry. Most jewelry consists of more than gold and silver. Rings, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants usually also have precious and semi-precious gemstones. Digital gem scales are designed to weigh these gems once they’ve been removed from the jewelry in order to determine their value. Whatever you need from your gem scale, at Digital Scales AZ we have a large selection to ensure there’s one that’s right for you.
